Ziegler Carpets – The History and Science of Carpets

For nearly 150 years, Ziegler carpets have inspired culture lovers around the world. Ziegler rug colors and patterns vary and are very creative, but the classic Ziegler Farahan rug is the most popular and sought after Ziegler rug. Other famous representatives are Ziegler Chobi, Ziegler Bakhtiari, Ziegler Shaal and Ziegler Abrasch. They all differ fundamentally in style.

Ziegler carpets owe their name to Swiss entrepreneur Philipp Ziegler, who was the first European to establish a carpet weaving factory in the former Persia in the late 19th century. There he had modern carpets made that were deliberately adapted to European tastes without abandoning Persian designs and traditions. With success: the Ziegler wool carpets soon became an international quality brand. Today, Ziegler carpets are no longer woven by the original manufacturer, but the reputation and enthusiasm for ornamental and modern carpets remain. The hand-knotted Ziegler rug in a beautiful colour combination of beige as the base colour and a second colour such as red, blue or green, beautifies any living room and blends in beautifully with the surrounding furniture.

The classic Ziegler rugs are decorated with large floral illustrations and usually have no actual ornament, but a central point from which the pattern branches out. The base colour is beige and the border or centre is usually red, blue and more rarely brown or even green. The colours are much more restrained than in traditional Persian rugs, and so blend in more easily with their surroundings than lush oriental rugs.

Modern Ziegler rugs – A recent trend is creative and new designs of Ziegler rugs that feature the original Persian pattern but have been reinterpreted in a completely new way. Ziegler Bakhtiar is a good example of how an ancient pattern is knotted in a new and modern way as Ziegler. In doing so, the traditional field or garden pattern is reduced to its basic elements and a completely new carpet is created. All that remains of the old original Bakhtiar carpet are the tiles arranged in a checkerboard pattern on a uniform ground. Ziegler Shaal is also based on the old Luren patterns, which no longer exist. However, many of the modern Ziegler rugs are increasingly difficult to classify and are similar only in the quality of the knotting.

Ziegler carpets come mainly from Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. Ziegler carpets are no longer knitted in Iran today, as the Ziegler company disappeared with the stock market crash of 1929. After the economic downturn, demand plummeted in the following years. However, the carpet had already gained many enthusiasts, and over time Ziegler carpets began to be knitted in other countries. In doing so, they referred to the old ways and patterns of knotting. The Afghan and Pakistani Zieglers are of particularly high quality. However, due to the ongoing civil war, many Zieglers from Afghanistan are traded and sold through neighbouring Pakistan. In some cases, the original origin remains uncertain. Indian Ziegler carpets differ little from these. Only true carpet experts can immediately spot the differences in pattern, weave and quality.

Ziegler Chobi – In fact, any Ziegler with a beige colored backing can be described as a Chobi Ziegler. It is often assumed that Chobi and Farahan denote differences in quality. However, this is a mistake as chobi means wooden. In Afghanistan and Pakistan, therefore, carpets of all qualities are called Ziegler Chobi. Similarly, the addition of Farahan denotes the old pattern, not the quality of the Ziegler carpet.

Ziegler is an oriental carpet that has little competition among all the various oriental carpets, for there is none that can boast a comparable variety of designs, colour combinations and patterns, and this continuous wealth of ideas has no end. Ziegler rugs only combine beautiful pastel colours, a thin pile and a rustic feel. Everyone can find one that suits them in this range. Whether in a rustically furnished living room, a modern bedroom or as a long runner in the hallway: thanks to its restrained noble nature, it will add a subtle touch to any room.

Ziegler carpet cleaning and maintenance

Ziegler carpets with natural material require professional care. It is not recommended to attempt home deep cleaning with a steam cleaner from the back and front, as the steam cleaner is unable to clean it all and the excessive heat penetrating it damages the wool and its natural lanolin. Excessive heat can also lead to shrinkage of the natural fibres of Ziegler carpets, putting you at risk of permanent damage.

Home care for Ziegler carpets is simple. Regular weekly vacuuming ideally with a knocking head will not harm it for decades. The natural vegetable dyes, dense weave and natural grease of virgin wool provide protection so most dirt will not penetrate the carpet at all. Only the smallest particles of sand and dust can settle in the foundation over time. In order to remove even the smallest dust particles from the carpet, it is recommended to have the carpet deep cleaned every 2-3 years by an expert – professional natural carpet cleaner.

In everyday life, Ziegler carpets know only two enemies: red wine and years of sunlight. Red wine stains can be treated, but cleaning is very time consuming and therefore a non-negligible cost factor. To prevent one-sided exposure of the carpet to sunlight, it helps to rotate the carpet frequently at even intervals so that both sides are exposed to similar amounts of sunlight. The sun does not necessarily lead to a reduction in the value of the carpet. Many old and antique Ziegler rugs have only become particularly beautiful and valuable through even exposure to sunlight. Some Ziegler rugs are even exposed to the sun for long periods of time to give the color a brighter, more balanced sheen.

If the Ziegler carpet only comes into contact with water, it is usually sufficient to dry it thoroughly on both sides. The carpet will lift for a few days when wet, as the warp expands due to the moisture. Once the moisture has escaped from the carpet, the warp will settle again and the carpet will not change. Heavy rubbing of water stains in dry conditions or the use of cleaning agents should be avoided, as both can damage the Ziegler carpet. In the case of coffee or cola stains, you should contact a professional as soon as possible. You can treat the stain yourself using lukewarm water and dishwashing liquid. However, you should seek professional advice before doing so.

Mould removal + mould prevention on older Ziegler carpets that may smell of mould or damp smell is important not to neglect, as natural carpets have a natural tendency to retain moisture which later leads to mould. There are several ways you can get rid of unpleasant odours by cleaning your carpets:

  • Leave the Ziegler carpet in sunlight for a few hours.
  • Blow dry the carpet with a fan on both sides, remembering to work in sections.
  • Take the carpet to a professional carpet cleaner – this is a guaranteed way to get rid of mould from the carpet.

The professional carpet cleaning and the reputable Ziegler carpet maintenance provided through expertly skilled technology brings the assurance that your Ziegler carpet will not shrink, fade, or even show any damage.

  • We first remove most dirt and dust from the carpet by hand with gentle machinery, instead of running it through aggressive equipment that can damage your precious carpet.
  • Depending on the material of your carpet, we will use a specialized stain remover to thoroughly remove or reduce the stain depending on the condition of the carpet.
  • Depending on the material, your carpet will either be cleaned in a water bath and then chemically cleaned using special “WOOL SAFE” chemical cleaners.
  • Ziegler carpets are then dried as best as possible to remove excess moisture and allowed to dry and turned off.
  • Finally, we thoroughly disinfect and impregnate the Ziegler carpet and after a thorough inspection, we wrap it and prepare it for delivery or transport to you.

How you can protect your carpet from damage

  • Moth larvae nesting in Ziegler carpets are quite common and can be kept under control by regular vacuuming, leaving the carpets in sunlight for a few hours and also by having them professionally cleaned.
  • If you want to store Ziegler carpets in a warehouse, it is best to have them professionally cleaned and kept in an enclosed area to prevent dirt from getting on them.
  • Always store your carpet in a clean, dry area, as moisture causes damage to the carpet.
  • To avoid excessive pressure on the carpet, use furniture covers on the legs of tables and chairs.
  • Use thick rubber pads under loose rugs to prevent them from sliding. They also help manage the weight of the furniture.

In conclusion, it’s always better to have Ziegler carpets cleaned by a professional than to try to do it yourself. This is because the more likely a mistake is made, the more your carpet will be damaged or may become locally degraded, even irreversibly.
