Oriental rug repair is a very essential part of the services we provide, as Persian and natural rugs are among the most prized handmade products in the world. They are known for their intricate weave, rich patterns and long history. Persian rugs are not just floor coverings, but true works of art that have been passed down from generation to generation. Their fine handmade craftsmanship and high quality materials make them a valuable investment. But like any other work of art, Persian rugs need care and maintenance to maintain their beauty and value. Persian rug repairs are crucial to ensure that your rug stays in perfect condition and can serve you for many years to come.
Persian and Oriental rugs are most often made from hand-spun sheep’s wool, more rarely from goat or camel wool. For greater strength and durability, cotton fibre is also increasingly used for the warp, and the pile is usually wool, sometimes cotton. More luxurious rugs may be all-silk or with silk pile on a cotton warp. At first sight they are characterised by a high gloss and occasionally metallic fibres are used in silver or gold.
Persian rugs are of high value not only for their aesthetic beauty but also for their cultural and historical significance. Many are more than just decorative elements – they are a testament to the skill and craftsmanship that has been part of Persian culture for centuries. Investing in a Persian rug is often a long-term investment and these rugs can increase in value with time.
Rug upholstery
However even the finest Persian rugs need care and repair as they can become damaged through wear and tear, improper maintenance or accidental accidents. That’s where professional Persian rug repair comes in to ensure that your rug stays beautiful and functional for a long time.
Persian rug repairs have their own laws and it is important to know how the repair process works. Our expert service provides everything you need to keep your Persian rug looking like new, even if it has stood the test of time. Persian and oriental rugs are divided into two basic types in terms of production: knotted (with pile) and woven – kelims (kilims), double-sided rugs without pile.
Woven or oriental rugs can be technically cleaned in our dry cleaning shop. This procedure helps to avoid fraying of the edges. Rug hemming involves the use of a firm stitch around the entire perimeter of the rug. For the edging we use a festoon border that matches the colour of the rug using polyamide thread, which ensures a nice look and durability.
Rug edging is offered in all sizes and shapes, from small rugs to large rugs, at competitive prices. Payment is charged per linear metre.
Types of oriental rugs
Knotted rugs (with pile) are divided according to the type of knot. Basically, all rugs are knotted with either a symmetrical (Turkish, ghiordes) knot or an asymmetrical irregular (Persian, senneh) knot. These are not knots in the true sense of the word, but only loops that are stretched around two, rarely three or four warp threads.
The two main types of nodes are easy to distinguish. Fold the carpet lengthwise across the width, i.e. in the direction of the weft. In a symmetrical (Turkish) knot, the wool is wrapped around the two adjacent warp threads and the ends of the knot pass between them. In an asymmetrical (Persian) knot, the loop is twisted around one warp thread and the other half is twisted around the next warp thread, so the second warp thread lies between the two ends of the knot. As a result, when looking into the pile of a symmetrical (Turkish) weave, the warp is not visible, whereas in the case of an asymmetrical (Persian) weave, one of the two warp threads can be seen.
To distinguish the type of knot in very well knotted carpets, we need a magnifying glass. The difference between Turkish and Persian weave does not indicate any difference in the quality of the carpet. In a very well knotted rug, the asymmetrical Persian knot allows slightly more versatility for more complex motifs, to create softer lines.
The density of knots (finish) per 1 dm² is determined by the thickness of the material used, which means that silk carpets are much finer than wool carpets. In fact, finely knotted carpets command a higher price than coarsely knotted carpets. This is because the cost of the material is higher and it takes longer to make. Still, it is not a rule that a carpet with a higher density of knots must be better and more expensive. The quality and price of carpets is influenced by many other factors – the age of the carpet, its uniqueness, the quality of the weaving, the workmanship of the material and colour and last but not least the place of origin, originality and pattern.
The delivery is best determined on the reverse side of the rug. We always count 10 cm of horizontal and 10 cm of vertical knots, then multiply these numbers. The best result is obtained by calculating the diameter from several different parts of the rug. When counting knots in the horizontal direction (after the weft) it is important to remember that each knot passes through 2 warp threads.
Representative carpet quality by number of knots per 1 dm²:
- Up to 500 knots – very coarse
- 500 – 1000 knots – coarse
- 1000 – 2000 knots – medium fine
- 2000 – 2500 knots – fine
- 2500 – 4500 knots – very fine
- above 4500 knots – extremely fine
When is it time to repair a Persian rug?
Although Persian rugs are known for their durability and longevity, they can experience different types of damage over time. Some of these are visible at first glance, while others may be hidden and only become apparent after a thorough inspection. How do you know when it’s time for Persian carpet repairs? Here are the most common situations when you should consider repair:
Fibre wear
Persian carpets are often located in high-traffic areas, which means their fibers can weaken over time. This can cause them to break down or gradually lose their original luster and appearance.
Frayed edges
Carpet edges are one of the most vulnerable areas to wear and damage. Frayed or damaged edges can lead to further disintegration of the carpet if not addressed in time. Professional Persian rug repair involves careful reinforcement and repair of the edges to prevent further damage.
Damaged fringe
Fringes are a key decorative element of many Persian rugs, but they are also very susceptible to wear and damage. If the fringe starts to fray, shorten or fall off completely, it is essential to have it repaired. Fringe repairs are part of comprehensive Persian rug repairs and help to restore the original appearance of your Persian rug.
Spots and soiling
Stains from food, drinks, chemicals or pets can permanently damage the fibres of a Persian rug if not treated quickly and correctly. Professional cleaning and Persian rug repair involves removing these stains without damaging the material.
Colour fading
Persian carpets are known for their rich and saturated colors, which are often achieved through the use of natural dyes. With time, however, these colors can fade due to exposure to sunlight or improper maintenance. Color repair and restoration can restore the carpet to its original beauty.
Insect damage
Moths and other insects can cause significant damage to carpet by feeding on its fibers. If you discover signs of insect damage on your Persian rug, it is important to proceed with repairing and protecting the rug as soon as possible.
How does the Persian rug repair process work?
Persian rug repair requires a careful and professional approach. Each carpet is unique and requires an individual repair plan that takes into account its age, patterns, material used and degree of damage. Professional Persian rug repairs are carried out by experienced craftsmen who have a deep knowledge of traditional weaving and restoration techniques.
Carpet damage diagnosis
The first step in Persian rug repair is a thorough diagnosis. Our experts will examine the rug to determine the extent of the damage and the types of repairs that will be needed. This step is crucial in determining what techniques and materials will be used.
Hand weaving and fiber repair
If the carpet is worn or has damaged fibers, our experts will use traditional hand weaving to repair each section. Hand weaving repairs are time consuming, but ensure that the repairs accurately match the original design and texture of the rug.
Edge reinforcement and repair
The edges of Persian carpets are sensitive to wear and tear and therefore need to be reinforced and repaired regularly. Our craftsmen use special techniques to ensure that the edges of the carpet are strong and durable without altering its original appearance.
Fringe repair
Fringe is often the first part of a carpet to wear out. Repairing fringes involves reconstructing or replacing them, making sure that the new fringes match the original design exactly. Our Persian rug repair includes comprehensive fringe care to keep your rug looking perfect.
Removal of stains and cleaning
Thorough cleaning to remove dust, stains, and other contaminants is also important in Persian rug repair. We use gentle cleaning methods that preserve the natural characteristics of the carpet and its colour.
Dyeing and colour restoration
If the carpet has lost its original colour saturation, we can carry out colour restoration using special techniques. These techniques involve using natural dyes that are as close as possible to the original colours of the carpet.
